Ujjain Simhastha Kumbh Mela scam (Madhya Pradesh)

The future of the Ujjain Simhastha Kumbh Mela has come under threat as the land reserved for the fair are being sold by local builders and residents. The BJP government had acquired acres of land to conduct the mela, but private parties are selling off the same land and this is all happening under the nose of the district administration. Illegal constructions are also being made on this land. This is happening even after the government issued a notification barring any construction on the land. The alleged involvement of many BJP leaders is reported.

Ujjain Simhastha Kumbh Mela scam (Madhya Pradesh)

Shivraj Singh Chouhan government allegedly did a scam worth crores in organising Simhastha Kumbh in Ujjain in 2016. In order to cover this up, multiple lies were spread by the government on the actual expenditure met. The Lok Sabha was informed that more than Rs 4,471 crore was spent on Ujjain Simhastha. However, the government gave a completely different figure in the Assembly, where they said that they had spent just over Rs 2,000 crore. There is no explanation on the difference of around Rs 2,470 crore. Later, in his message on the Independence Day, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan lied again, and this time he said that a sum of Rs 3,377 crore was spent on Ujjain Simhastha. Irregularities in purchase of various items such as clay water urns, metallic stands etc. were also reported. For example, clay water urns that were worth Rs 150 were bought for Rs 750 each.

University Land Scam

65,000 square metres of land was allotted to Chatrala Indian Hotel Group by Gujarat government for constructing a five-star hotel. This land belonged to Navsari Agriculture University in Surat and the allotment was made despite the institute raising objection. The deal caused a loss of Rs 426 crore to the state exchequer.
